By Dr Pranab Gyawali, Consultant Gastroenterologist
Many of my patients with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis in Dubai feel anxious when they hear about “biologic treatments.” If you were in clinic with me in Dubai and we were about to start a biologic, this is exactly how I explain how these medicines work — and why they’ve changed the way we treat IBD. I hope you find it helpful.
What are biologics for Crohn’s and colitis?
Biologics are advanced medicines used for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). They are not steroids or general immune suppressants — they target only the immune signals that cause gut inflammation.
Why does inflammation happen in IBD?
In Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, the immune system mistakes the intestinal lining for infection and attacks it, causing ulcers, pain, bleeding, and fatigue. If this continues unchecked, it can damage the bowel — biologics help stop this early.
How do biologics actually work in Crohn’s and colitis?
If you were sitting with me in clinic, I’d explain it like this: your immune system is like an orchestra. In IBD, one section plays too loud — biologics act like the conductor, restoring balance.
- Infliximab and Hyrimoz block TNF.
- Entyvio blocks α4β7 integrin so excess immune cells can’t enter the gut wall.
- Skyrizi and Rinvoq target IL-23 and JAK pathways.
What improvements do patients notice?
As inflammation settles, patients usually notice fewer bowel motions, less bleeding, and improved energy. Over time, the bowel lining repairs — mucosal healing — and flare-ups become far less frequent.
Are biologics safe for Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis in Dubai?
Yes. Biologics such as Entyvio, Skyrizi, Hyrimoz, Rinvoq, and Infliximab are widely used in Dubai and internationally with excellent safety records. Patients are screened, vaccinated, and monitored with blood tests, faecal calprotectin, and sometimes endoscopy.
Where can patients access biologic treatment in Dubai?
Dr Pranab Gyawali is experienced with both originator and biosimilar biologics — including Infliximab, Entyvio, Hyrimoz, Skyrizi, and Rinvoq — following international IBD guidelines. Treatments are individualized and monitored closely for safety and response.
