Crohn’s Disease Care in Dubai: Assessment and Treatment Discussion
Living with Crohn’s disease can be challenging, and management usually requires careful assessment, monitoring and treatment planning.
With over 25 years of experience as a Consultant Gastroenterologist in London and Dubai, including work in major UK teaching hospitals such as University College Hospital London and the Royal Free Hospital, I have managed Crohn’s disease across outpatient, inpatient and complex care settings.
In Dubai, my approach is to provide structured Crohn’s disease assessment and treatment discussion based on symptoms, disease location, severity, previous treatment history and investigation findings. This may be relevant whether you are newly diagnosed or have been living with Crohn’s disease for many years.
What You Need to Know About Crohn’s Disease
Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. This inflammation can vary greatly from one patient to another, often leading to serious complications as it spreads to deeper layers of the bowel tissue.
While the exact cause of Crohn’s disease remains unclear, it is believed to result from a combination of genetic factors, environmental influences, and immune system abnormalities.
Recognising Active Crohn’s Symptoms and Flares
The symptoms of Crohn’s disease can be severe and may include:
- Fever and diarrhea
- Abdominal cramps and pain
- Fatigue
- Blood in stools
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Mouth sores
- Pain around the anus
- Inflammation of the liver, joints, skin, and eyes
What to Expect After a New Crohn’s Diagnosis
Being told you have Crohn’s disease can be overwhelming — and many patients are left without clear guidance on what to do next. That’s why I created a short video covering the five most important things I tell every newly diagnosed patient.

These are the key points I share in clinic to help patients understand their condition, make informed choices, and feel more in control early on.
Whether you're navigating symptoms, diet changes, or medication options, this video will give you a grounded starting point.
Why Early Crohn’s Treatment in Dubai Makes a Difference
If left untreated, Crohn’s disease can lead to serious complications such as severe malnutrition, bowel obstruction, colon cancer, and ulcers throughout the digestive tract.
Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help reduce inflammation, assess complication risk and guide the next steps in care.
How Crohn's Disease May Be Assessed
Assessment of Crohn’s disease may involve a combination of clinical review, blood tests, stool tests, endoscopy and imaging, depending on the symptoms and clinical situation. These may include:
- Blood tests
- Stool tests
- Colonoscopy
- Capsule endoscopy
- Imaging such as CT, MRI or MR enterography when clinically appropriate
Crohn’s Disease Treatment Options
Once the diagnosis, disease location and severity are assessed, treatment options may include:
- Medications:
- Anti inflammatory medicines, immune modifying treatment, biologic or advanced therapies, antibiotics in selected situations and symptom control where appropriate.
- Nutritional Support:
Assessment and correction of nutritional deficiencies such as iron, B12, folate or vitamin D, with dietary guidance where appropriate. - Surgical Intervention:
In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove damaged sections of the digestive tract. While surgery is not a cure, it can be a crucial step in managing the disease. - Supportive Care, Diet and Lifestyle:
Supportive care may include dietary guidance, lifestyle discussion, symptom tracking and correction of deficiencies. These are used alongside appropriate medical treatment, not as a replacement for evidence based Crohn’s therapy.
Diet, Lifestyle and Long Term Crohn’s Care
Managing Crohn’s disease involves controlling inflammation, monitoring symptoms, checking for complications and supporting nutrition and general wellbeing.
Treatment may include medicines, biologic or advanced therapies where appropriate, nutritional support and lifestyle discussion. The aim is to reduce inflammation, maintain remission where possible and lower the risk of complications.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions on Crohn’s Disease in Dubai
Q1. Do you treat Crohn’s disease in Dubai?
Yes, I see patients with Crohn’s disease in Dubai and provide assessment, monitoring and treatment discussion based on symptoms, disease location, severity, investigations and previous treatment history.
Q2. How is Crohn’s disease different from ulcerative colitis?
Crohn’s can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus, and often involves deeper layers of the bowel wall. Ulcerative colitis only affects the colon and rectum.
Q3. What are the latest treatments for Crohn’s disease?
Depending on disease severity and previous treatment history, options may include anti inflammatory medicines, immune modifying treatment, biologics or advanced therapies, nutritional support and monitoring for complications.
Q4. Can Crohn’s be managed with diet and microbiome testing?
Diet alone does not cure Crohn’s disease, but dietary discussion may help with symptoms, nutrition and tolerance of foods. Microbiome testing may add context in selected cases, but it does not replace medical treatment or monitoring of inflammation.
Q5. Is Crohn’s treatment covered by insurance in Dubai?
Most insurers in Dubai cover Crohn’s investigations, colonoscopy, and treatment with medications such as biologics, depending on the policy. My clinic team can help verify coverage.
Q6. When should I see a gastroenterologist for Crohn’s?
If you have persistent abdominal pain, diarrhea, blood in stool, weight loss, or unexplained anemia, you should see a gastroenterologist promptly for assessment.
