Why Food Still Matters More Than Pills for Gut Health
By Dr. Pranab – Consultant Gastroenterologist in Dubai
In this recent video, I shared something that kept coming up in my clinic: patients with very different gut conditions — Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and IBS — all asking about supplements.
Which probiotic should I take? Should I be on gut health powders? What vitamins do I need?
These are fair questions. But after over 25 years of treating gut conditions, my answer is often this:
Don’t forget the food.
The One Thing Most Gut Patients Overlook
Gut health isn’t just about taking the right medication or probiotic — it’s about feeding your body and your gut microbiome the right way, consistently.
Whether you're living with Crohn’s, colitis, or IBS, your diet can directly impact inflammation, symptoms, and healing.
And yet, it's often the most overlooked part of treatment. It’s understandable — the internet is full of conflicting advice, and “gut health” has become a buzzword surrounded by expensive supplements and trendy powders.
But the truth is, real food still matters more than all of that.
It’s Not One-Size-Fits-All
There’s no universal “gut health diet.” What works in remission might not work during a flare.
Some people thrive on fiber-rich vegetables, while others can’t tolerate them when inflammation is active.
That’s why I always emphasise personalised dietary guidance, especially for patients here in Dubai managing inflammatory bowel disease or chronic IBS symptoms.
In my practice, we also use advanced gut microbiome testing when needed — it helps us personalise food recommendations even further, based on what your own gut bacteria need.
The Bottom Line
Supplements may play a role — but they are never the whole solution.
If you’re dealing with Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, or IBS, and feel stuck, don’t just add another pill.
