Short overview: If you’ve been told you might need biologics for Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, this VLOG explains what they are, how they’re chosen, and what to expect before, during, and after treatment in Dubai.

What are biologics and how do they help in Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis?

Biologics are advanced medicines derived from living cells that target specific immune pathways causing inflammation. In Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (UC), they help calm inflammation, support bowel healing, reduce flares, and improve long-term quality of life.

What biologics are available for Crohn’s and UC in Dubai?

When I first started treating IBD, Infliximab (Remicade) was the only biologic available—it changed everything. Today, common options include:

  • Infliximab (Remicade, Remsima)
  • Adalimumab (Humira, Hyrimoz)
  • Vedolizumab (Entyvio)
  • Ustekinumab (Stelara)
  • Risankizumab (Skyrizi)
  • Guselkumab (Tremfya)
  • Upadacitinib (Rinvoq – oral, small molecule)

Each works differently—the choice must always be individualized. See our Biologics Information Page for the high-level overview.

How do doctors choose the right biologic for you?

There is no single “best” biologic. Choice involves matching: (1) the patient’s condition and disease history, with (2) the safest and most effective biologic for that profile. It’s never one-size-fits-all.

What checks are needed before starting biologics?

Pre-treatment assessments help ensure safety and the best outcomes:

  • Blood tests (inflammation, liver, kidney, blood counts)
  • Tuberculosis and hepatitis screening
  • Vaccination review (e.g., influenza, pneumonia)

Read more about vaccination before biologics (including the flu shot) here.

What happens during a biologic infusion?

Infusions are administered in registered, JCI-accredited settings with trained staff. Sessions typically last 1–2 hours depending on the medication. Mild headache or fatigue may occur and are usually short-lived. Serious reactions are very rare and quickly managed. Medicines must be stored properly and safety workflows followed.

What kind of monitoring is needed after you start biologics?

Ongoing monitoring keeps treatment safe and effective:

  • Blood tests and drug level monitoring
  • Infection risk review and skin checks
  • Vaccination updates
  • Cervical and cancer screening as recommended
  • Regular follow-ups with your gastroenterologist

How long before biologics start working?

Many patients notice improvement within 6–8 weeks (sometimes earlier). We reassess symptoms and biomarkers after the first few doses to guide next steps.

Where can I get biologic infusions in Dubai?

Biologic infusions should be given in licensed, JCI-accredited centers with proper storage, workflows, and safety protocols. Dr. Pranab Gyawali practices in a JCI-accredited facility experienced in the delivery and monitoring of biologic infusions for IBD.
