As your gastroenterologist, I believe in the importance of early detection and prevention when it comes to maintaining your digestive health. One of the most crucial tools we use is a colonoscopy, a procedure that helps us examine the entire colon and rectum for any abnormalities, including colorectal cancer, polyps, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure where a long, flexible tube with a camera (colonoscope) is inserted through the rectum to examine the inside of your large intestine. This procedure allows me to detect and, in some cases, remove polyps before they develop into colorectal cancer. It’s also used to diagnose conditions like Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and chronic constipation or diarrhea.

During the procedure, you’ll be given light sedation to ensure your comfort, and the entire process usually takes about 30 minutes. The good news is that if any abnormal tissue or polyps are found, they can often be removed during the same procedure, reducing the need for further treatment.

When Should You Consider a Colonoscopy?

You may need a colonoscopy if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Chronic abdominal pain
  • Changes in bowel habits, such as persistent diarrhea or constipation
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Family history of colorectal cancer

In addition, adults over the age of 45 are recommended to undergo routine colonoscopy screenings for the early detection of colon cancer. If you have a personal or family history of polyps or inflammatory bowel disease, more frequent screenings may be advised.

Preparing for Your Colonoscopy

Preparation is key for a successful colonoscopy. You will need to follow a special diet and take a bowel-cleansing preparation the day before the procedure to ensure that your colon is clear for examination. I’ll provide detailed instructions to guide you through this process.

After Your Colonoscopy

Following the procedure, I’ll discuss the findings with you in detail. If any polyps or tissue samples were taken, we’ll review the biopsy results during a follow-up consultation. You may feel some minor discomfort, such as bloating or gas, but these symptoms usually resolve within a day.

My priority is ensuring your comfort and well-being throughout the entire process. Whether you're undergoing a colonoscopy for routine screening or to investigate specific symptoms, I’m here to provide personalized, expert care every step of the way.
