One of the most common questions I get in my clinic in Dubai is about probiotics. Not only from Ulcerative Colitis patients, but across many gut conditions. I rarely recommend probiotics in routine practice. There are only a handful I use in selected situations, so when a properly conducted clinical trial appears, it is worth discussing carefully.
A company called Microbiotica recently released early clinical data on a product called MB310, which has attracted attention in the IBD community. If you prefer to watch rather than read, the video is embedded below.

Q: Do probiotics help in Ulcerative Colitis
The evidence is mixed. Some specific probiotic approaches have supportive data in selected UC situations, but many over the counter products do not have strong trial evidence. Probiotics should not replace standard Ulcerative Colitis treatments.
Q: What is MB310
MB310 is described as a live biotherapeutic product. This is different from a typical probiotic supplement. It is being developed as a medical therapy for disease, under clinical trial conditions. The product contains eight selected bacterial strains chosen based on microbiome research linked to remission patterns observed in earlier fecal microbiota transplant studies.
Q: What type of study was performed
The released data comes from an early Phase 1b randomised double blind placebo controlled trial in 29 patients with mild to moderate Ulcerative Colitis. Importantly, it was used on top of standard UC therapy, not as a replacement. Early phase studies are mainly designed to assess safety and look for early signals. Larger independent trials are needed before drawing firm conclusions.
Q: What were the results
According to the company release, around 63 percent of patients receiving MB310 achieved clinical remission compared with around 30 percent in the placebo group. The report also described resolution of rectal bleeding in treated patients who entered follow up and persistence of the bacteria during and after treatment.
Q: Why is this different from standard probiotics
Most commercial probiotics are general supplements and many do not persist in the gut for long. This approach is different because it is disease focused, trial tested, and designed as a medical therapy rather than a wellness product. It is still early research, but it represents a more targeted direction in microbiome based therapy for Ulcerative Colitis.
