Here in Dubai, I am seeing increasing numbers of patients with bloating, abdominal discomfort, IBS-type symptoms and microbiome imbalance. Many also ask about “leaky gut”. One of the most consistent patterns I see is that many of these patients rely heavily on ultra-processed foods, often without realising how frequently they appear in their day.
This topic is now so important that The Lancet, one of the world’s most influential medical journals, has dedicated an entire series of papers to it – highlighting the global rise in chronic diseases linked to ultra-processed foods. Here in Dubai, where gut-related conditions and inflammatory bowel disease appear to be rising over time, this is particularly relevant.
Ultra-Processed Foods & Gut Health (Dubai Gastroenterologist Explains)
Why Ultra-Processed Foods Matter for Gut Health
Most people think ultra-processed foods are harmful only because of fat, sugar or calories. In reality, the bigger concern is the industrial additives that come with modern food processing, such as:
- Emulsifiers
- Stabilisers and gums
- Modified starches
- Artificial sweeteners
- Flavour enhancers
- Other processing aids
Research suggests these substances can:
- Weaken the gut barrier, contributing to the “leaky gut” sensations many patients describe
- Shift the gut microbiome, reducing beneficial species
- Increase low-grade inflammation
- Worsen digestive symptoms like bloating, cramping and gas
- Increase sensitivity in people with IBS, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
Why This Matters in Dubai
Dubai lifestyle is fast-paced. Food delivery is widespread. Packaged, convenient foods are everywhere. Eating out is a regular part of life, and in this environment, ultra-processed foods can easily become the default for breakfast, snacks and even dinners.
This is one of the reasons why I now discuss ultra-processed foods with almost every patient I see, whether they come in with IBS, bloating, abdominal pain, “leaky gut” concerns, microbiome imbalance, Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. I do not expect everyone to avoid these foods completely – that would be unrealistic – but we absolutely need to understand their impact.
What This Means for Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis Patients
If you are living with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, diet will not replace medical therapy or biologics. However, it can have a meaningful influence on symptom control over time.
Ultra-processed foods tend to:
- Make the gut lining more reactive
- Increase bloating, urgency and abdominal pain
- Aggravate microbiome sensitivity
- Increase symptoms even when inflammation appears controlled
In Dubai, where convenience foods are so easy to access, addressing this is often one of the most important long-term changes we work on alongside medication.
A Simple, Practical Way to Start: The One-Swap Method
You do not need to overhaul your entire diet overnight. In fact, trying to change everything at once is usually unsustainable. Instead, I often suggest a very simple starting point:
Swap one ultra-processed snack per day for something more whole and simple.
For example, you could replace a packaged bar, flavoured yoghurt, crisps or a sugary processed item with:
- A handful of unsalted nuts
- Fresh fruit such as berries, an apple or a banana
- Plain yoghurt with your own fruit
- Hummus with cucumber or carrot sticks
- A simple homemade sandwich
- Boiled eggs
Over time, these small but consistent changes reduce the volume of additives passing through your gut and give your microbiome a better chance to stabilise. Your gut health notices what you eat – and even one swap per day can make a real difference over weeks and months.
