When IV Iron Is Used
IV iron is used when tablets fail, are not tolerated, or when fast correction is required such as in pregnancy, before surgery, severe fatigue, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) flares, coeliac disease, or heavy menstrual bleeding. It may also be recommended when gut absorption is reduced after bowel surgery or with chronic inflammation.
Short Guide to IV Iron Infusion
Types of IV Iron Available in Dubai
Ferinject (Ferric Carboxymaltose)
- Usually delivered in one or two sessions, depending on how much iron is needed.
- Infusion time is typically around 15–20 minutes.
- Allows relatively rapid correction of iron deficiency.
- Possible side effects: headache, flushing, nausea or mild reaction at the injection site. Serious allergic reactions are rare but staff monitor throughout the infusion.
Monofer (Ferric Derisomaltose)
- Often given as a single total-dose infusion, so one visit can deliver the full amount of iron required.
- Infusion time is usually about 20–30 minutes.
- Very convenient for people with busy schedules or those travelling in for treatment.
- Side effects are similar to other IV irons – mild headache, flushing or local discomfort. Serious allergy is very rare.
Venofer (Iron Sucrose)
- One of the older IV iron preparations with a long safety record.
- Usually given as several smaller doses over multiple sessions.
- May require more visits compared with newer options.
- Possible side effects: temporary taste changes, lightheadedness, mild drop in blood pressure or flushing during the infusion. Severe allergic reactions are very rare.
Which IV Iron Is Best?
No single IV iron preparation is “best” for everyone. The choice depends on:
- Your blood test results and severity of iron deficiency.
- The total iron dose required.
- How quickly the iron needs to be corrected.
- Your body weight and other medical conditions such as IBD, coeliac disease or heart problems.
All of the above IV iron types can be very effective when used correctly and given in an appropriate clinical setting.
Safety & Side Effects
Most people tolerate IV iron infusion very well. However, as with any medical treatment there are potential side effects:
- Common, usually mild: headache, flushing, metallic taste in the mouth, nausea, or mild discomfort at the cannula site.
- Less common: temporary drop in blood pressure, lightheadedness, or a brief feeling of warmth.
- Serious allergic reactions: these are rare (estimated around 0.02–0.1%) but can occur. This is why IV iron is always given in a monitored setting with trained staff and emergency medications immediately available.
Why a JCI-Accredited Centre Matters
In Dubai, many patients ask how to know if their infusion centre has robust safety processes. JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation is an international quality standard originally developed from US hospital accreditation systems. It indicates that:
- Medications like IV iron are stored and handled according to strict protocols.
- Doses are double-checked and prescribed according to validated dosing calculators and guidelines.
- Nurses and doctors are trained in recognising and managing infusion reactions.
- Emergency equipment and medications are available within the unit.
- Processes are regularly audited against international benchmarks.
For IV iron, this adds an extra layer of safety and reassurance, particularly when treating patients with complex medical conditions.
Infusion Duration & Follow-Up
- Ferinject: usually 15–20 minutes for each infusion, depending on dose.
- Monofer: often 20–30 minutes as a single total-dose infusion.
- Venofer: given in multiple shorter sessions over days or weeks.
After your infusion, follow-up blood tests are typically done around 4–6 weeks later to assess the response. In some cases, especially if the underlying cause of iron deficiency continues, a repeat infusion or ongoing monitoring may be needed.
