Crohn’s Treatment Breakthrough or Just Headlines? Dubai Gut Doctor Explains
What’s this article about?
A recent headline claimed that AI has helped discover a new antibiotic for Crohn’s disease – and it’s been circulating across social media and patient groups, including here in Dubai.
The article refers to a new study in Nature Microbiology, where scientists used artificial intelligence to help identify a compound called enterololin – a narrow-spectrum antibiotic designed to target harmful gut bacteria without disturbing the rest of the microbiome.
Is this a real treatment for Crohn’s disease?
Not yet.
The researchers tested enterololin in mice colonized with a specific bacteria called AIEC, which has been linked to Crohn’s disease. The drug reduced AIEC levels and preserved much of the microbiome – which is promising.
- The mice did not have IBD – just AIEC colonization.
- Not all Crohn’s patients carry AIEC.
- This antibiotic has not been tested in humans.
So, while it’s a step toward microbiome-targeted therapies, it’s not a treatment currently available in Dubai – or anywhere else.
Why is this relevant for Crohn’s patients in Dubai?
Because it reinforces the growing understanding that gut bacteria matter.
Crohn’s isn’t caused by a single bug – but we now know that changes in the microbiome, especially overgrowth of strains like AIEC, can worsen inflammation in some patients.
And here in Dubai, more IBD patients are starting to ask about microbiome testing, probiotics, and diet as part of long-term management – not just medication alone.
What Crohn’s treatments are currently available in Dubai?
If you’re living with Crohn’s in Dubai, current treatment options include:
- Biologics – infliximab, adalimumab, ustekinumab, vedolizumab
- Immunosuppressants and steroid-sparing agents
- Small-molecule drugs like tofacitinib (in select cases)
- Diet and microbiome-informed care through specialist IBD clinics
These are available at JCI-accredited hospitals and private clinics in Dubai.
How important is the microbiome in Crohn’s care?
The gut microbiome plays a key role in Crohn’s – influencing immune function, gut barrier strength, and inflammation.
Even patients on biologics may experience bloating, fatigue, or irregular bowels – often due to microbial imbalance. Microbiome testing and diet adjustment can help address these symptoms and reduce flare risk.
