Mold in the Gut? The Truth About Fungi and Gut Health

You may have already watched my video above, where I explain the reality behind so-called “mold in the gut.” Many patients in Dubai come across confusing information online about mold, candida, or antifungal treatments — and I want to set the record straight.

Household Mold vs. Gut Fungi

When people talk about “mold in the gut,” they often confuse environmental mold (like the green or black mold on damp walls or ceilings) with the fungi that naturally live in your gut.

  • Household mold can cause problems if you breathe it in, especially if you are immunosuppressed, but it does not normally grow inside your digestive system.
  • In the gut, we naturally carry fungi such as Candida and Saccharomyces. These are part of the gut mycobiome, and just like bacteria, they need to be kept in balance for good health.

Should You Use Antifungals?

In my 25+ years as a gastroenterologist, I’ve prescribed antifungal medicines like itraconazole or fluconazole — but only for proven fungal infections. Taking antifungals unnecessarily can:

  • Wipe out beneficial fungi,
  • Disrupt your gut microbiome,
  • And even damage the liver.

For most people with a normal immune system, your gut fungi are kept under control naturally.

I discuss this further in my vlog: Gut Microbiome Explained

Worried About Fungi in the Gut?

If you are genuinely concerned about fungal overgrowth, or you want a clear picture of what’s happening in your gut, the most reliable option is a gut microbiome assessment. This advanced test identifies both bacteria and fungi in your digestive system and gives a full overview of your gut health.

How to Support Healthy Gut Fungi

The smarter way to look after your gut is by supporting balance:

  • plant-rich diet high in fibre,
  • Fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, and kimchi,
  • A healthy lifestyle with good sleep and exercise.

In some cases, I also recommend probiotics — and certain strains, such as those containing beneficial fungi, can play an important role in restoring gut balance.

Final Word

Instead of worrying about “mold in the gut,” focus on creating the right conditions for a healthy microbiome. That’s what I emphasise with my patients here in Dubai.

FAQs About Mold and Fungi in the Gut

Can mold really grow in the gut?
No — environmental mold, like the black or green mold found on walls or ceilings, does not usually grow inside the digestive system. What people call “mold in the gut” is actually the natural fungi (such as Candida and Saccharomyces) that live in the microbiome.

Is candida in the gut dangerous?
Most people in Dubai — and worldwide — carry some candida in their gut. In healthy individuals with a strong immune system, candida is kept under control naturally. Problems arise only if there is an imbalance or in people with weakened immunity.

When should I be concerned about fungi in my gut?
If you have persistent digestive symptoms such as bloating, loose stools, or unexplained abdominal pain, it may be worth checking your gut microbiome. For patients who are immunosuppressed, fungal infections can be more serious and need medical attention.

How can I naturally support good gut fungi?
A plant-rich diet, fermented foods like yoghurt or kefir, and healthy lifestyle habits are the best way to maintain a balanced gut mycobiome. In some cases, probiotics — including those with beneficial fungi — may also help.
