Introduction
Coffee is part of everyday life in Dubai. From early morning espressos to late-night café culture, many people drink several cups daily. But patients often ask me: Is there a safe limit? Can coffee trigger gut symptoms like reflux or diarrhea?
In my recent video, I suggested that sticking to around three cups a day is a sensible guideline. Let’s look at what international health organizations recommend and why some people may need to be even more cautious.
What Health Authorities Say
- FDA & Mayo Clinic: Up to 400 mg of caffeine daily (about 3–5 cups of brewed coffee) is safe for most adults.
- WHO: Advises moderation in caffeine use and highlights potential effects on sleep, blood pressure, and sensitive individuals.
- Practical Advice: Keeping to around 3 cups of coffee daily is a safe balance for most people, leaving room for caffeine from tea, chocolate, or soft drinks.
Coffee and Acid Reflux
Coffee stimulates stomach acid production. For people with GERD (acid reflux disease), this can mean:
- Burning sensation in the chest after meals
- Disrupted sleep when coffee is consumed late at night
- Increased dependence on acid-reducing medication
Tip: If reflux is a problem, try reducing intake, avoiding late-night coffee, or switching to lower-acid blends.
Coffee and Bowel Motions
Caffeine is a natural bowel stimulant. For patients with sensitive bowels, IBS, or IBD, coffee can:
- Trigger urgent bowel motions
- Cause abdominal cramping
- Worsen loose stools or diarrhea
Tip: If you notice urgent bowel motions after coffee, consider cutting back or tracking symptoms in a food diary.
When to Seek Medical Advice in Dubai
If you notice any of these while drinking coffee:
- Persistent or worsening reflux
- Diarrhea despite cutting down
- Blood in stool or unexplained weight loss
It’s time to consult a gastroenterologist. These may signal underlying gut conditions that need medical assessment.
