What is a Lactose Breath Test?
A lactose breath test is a non-invasive diagnostic investigation used to determine whether a person has lactose intolerance. It measures the amount of hydrogen and methane gases in the breath after consuming a lactose-containing drink. When the body cannot properly digest lactose, it ferments in the gut and produces excess gas, which can be detected through breath samples collected at regular intervals.
When is a Lactose Breath Test Recommended?
Healthcare providers may recommend the test in the following situations:
- Symptoms suggestive of lactose intolerance such as bloating, diarrhoea, or abdominal pain
- Unexplained gastrointestinal discomfort linked to dairy products
- Suspected secondary lactose malabsorption following infection, coeliac disease, or inflammatory bowel disease
- Assessment prior to dietary modification or elimination of dairy
- Persistent functional gut symptoms with unclear cause
How is a Lactose Breath Test Performed?
The test is usually carried out after an overnight fast. The patient first provides a baseline breath sample by blowing into a collection device. They then drink a lactose solution, after which further breath samples are taken every 15 to 30 minutes over a 2 to 3 hour period. The levels of hydrogen and methane are analysed to determine whether lactose is being properly digested and absorbed.
What to Expect after the Test
Most people can return to normal activities immediately after the test. Some may experience temporary bloating, gas, or mild abdominal discomfort as a result of consuming the lactose drink. These symptoms typically settle within a few hours without specific treatment.
What are the Risks of a Lactose Breath Test?
Although safe, possible risks include:
- Temporary gastrointestinal symptoms
- Nausea or cramping
- Diarrhoea during or shortly after the test
What are the Benefits of a Lactose Breath Test?
The test offers several advantages:
- Accurate and non-invasive diagnosis of lactose intolerance
- Helps guide diet and nutritional planning
- Prevents unnecessary dietary restrictions
Supports targeted treatment of digestive symptoms
